NRC was awarded funding from Canada’s Sustainable Fisheries Solutions & Retrieval Support Contribution Program, or Ghost Gear Fund. NRC will conduct five activities designed to create a baseline of capacity in British Columbia to locate and remove abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) and to prevent harm from newly lost fishing nets. Activities will include identifying the feasibility of a rapid response and retrieval program designed to reduce impacts of newly lost fishing nets in British Columbia; training divers to remove ALDFG; identifying hotspot areas of fishing gear loss; conducting 8 days of ALDFG surveys and removing approximately 10 derelict nets or up to 250 derelict pots from marine waters.
