Sustainable Fishery Certifications

NRC was instrumental in the initial development of sustainable fishery guidelines used by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to evaluate fisheries management. NRC recognizes the importance of certified sustainability to seafood consumers. NRC has also participated in elements of other sustainability programs such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch and the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute’s (ASMI) Responsible Fisheries Management. NRC has objectively gathered fisheries data and applied sustainable fisheries management criteria in a number of commercial fisheries, including salmon fisheries (Alaska, British Columbia, the Pacific West Coast, and Russia), Alaskan groundfish fisheries (Bering Sea pollock and cod), and Alaskan crab fisheries (snow, Tanner, red king, blue king and golden king crab). NRC has functioned in several roles including assessment team, independent expert reviewer, and client advisor.
