Fishery Employment Estimates for Workers on US Commercial Fishing Vessels

In an ongoing research project, NRC provides the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) with workforce estimates for federally managed fisheries in US marine waters. This includes merging multiple datasets from a variety of sources and thorough analysis of fishery management plans and associated amendments to determine number of active vessels, days at sea, and people employed per fishery by year and gear type. Final products are used by NIOSH to identify the varied levels of risk and safety concerns throughout the commercial fishing sector. Additionally, we have provided clients with 10-year fleet summaries to be used as baseline components for risk assessment studies.
